Off Duty Burglar Arrest in Shadwell by PC Mustafa SIDDIQUI – St Katharines and Wapping Neighbourhood ward team
On Tuesday, 24 February, PC Mustafa SIDDIQUI of the St Katharine’s and Wapping Neighbourhood Team had just gone off duty and was travelling home when he arrived at Shadwell DLR Station. While passing through the station, he recognised a male suspect linked to a series of burglaries he had been actively investigating. PC SIDDIQUI was able to identify the suspect through extensive prior CCTV work and by noting his distinctive clothing and mannerisms. PC SIDDIQUI discreetly followed the suspect and shortly encountered Sgt Roxane APOSTU from the Shadwell Neighbourhood Team, who was also off duty and heading home. He requested her assistance. As neither officer had their protective equipment with them as they were on their way, a quick phone call was made to Sgt Darren BOND, who was still at the SNT police station on Cable Street. Sgt BOND immediately ran from the station equipped with handcuffs and necessary kit.
The officers then conducted a co‑ordinated stop. After a brief struggle, the suspect was safely detained and arrested and the following items were found on the male:
The suspect was arrested for burglary offences, possession of drugs with intent to supply, handling stolen goods, and going equipped to steal. He was taken to Bethnal Green custody, interviewed, charged, and subsequently remanded to go to court.
PC SIDDIQUI demonstrated exceptional dedication to the communities of St Katharine’s and Wapping - not only through his thorough investigation leading up to this moment, but by taking decisive action while off duty to secure the arrest.
